Offline-first: your gym's dead zone shouldn't kill your log

The heavy stuff is usually in the basement. Squat racks, platforms, the proper iron — and, almost always, no phone signal. Concrete walls and a floor below ground are a great way to kill reception right where you most need to log a working set.

Plenty of apps quietly fall apart there. The set doesn’t save, the timer won’t start, the screen spins. Altor is offline-first, which means none of that is your problem.

What “offline-first” actually means

It’s not “works offline as a fallback.” It’s the other way around: the app is built to run entirely on your device, and the network is the optional part.

In practice:

  • Every set logs instantly, signal or not. The data lives on your phone first.
  • Rest timers, plan navigation, history — all work with the phone in airplane mode.
  • Sync happens later, quietly, when you’re back on a connection. You never wait on it.

You shouldn’t think about connectivity at all during a session. You’re under a bar; the app’s job is to be instant and stay out of the way.

Why serious lifters care

Casual users might tolerate a laggy log. People who train hard don’t — because the log is the training record. If a working set doesn’t save, you’ve lost the one data point your next session depends on. Progressive overload only works if last week’s numbers are reliable (more on that in Progressive overload, explained).

Offline-first also means speed. There’s no round-trip to a server between you tapping “done” and the set being saved. Mid-workout, that responsiveness is the difference between an app that respects your time and one that makes you wait.

No connection, no excuse

Basement gym, rural gym, a hotel rack on a trip, a festival of concrete and bad WiFi — it doesn’t matter. Your training gets logged, your plan keeps working, and everything reconciles when you surface. That’s the baseline a real training tool should clear.

Altor is an equipment-aware workout app for serious lifters — offline-first, built around the real equipment in your gym, with progression you can understand. We’re mapping gyms in Zürich first.
